Melayna still has three more cross country meets remaining in her career, but on Tuesday night, she ran her last meet on her home course. With the race beginning at 6:30 near the end of a long school day and temperatures in the high 80's, we had asked her what her goal was for the night. She said that she would love to run another race in the 22's but she wouldn't be too terribly disappointed if she finished with a 23 minute mark because their home course is more of a technical course and she knew that she would also be tired already from a very busy school day. I wasn't sure what to expect for the night but when we saw her before the meet, she was all smiles and ready to go. Apparently she had taken a short power nap under the tent and she was really excited about running and finishing well.
Here she is on her way over to say hi to me and to her grandparents who were able to come and cheer her on.
I only took a couple of pictures during the race but I thought she was running in a great position with the rest of her teammates and she looked really strong. There were a couple of teammates running ahead of her and she was able to get up to them and eventually finish ahead of them. (She finished in 10th position for the team and 47th overall out of all of the conference runners).
She came back over to us after the race ended and let us know that she finished with a 22:58 which isn't quite a PR but her second fastest race ever. We will definitely take that one!! 'Not a bad way to finish out on your own home course.
But more than fast times and places, the most meaningful part of the night was when Melayna and another teammate offered to lead a prayer circle after the meet ended and most of the team came over to join them.
The Lady Tigers walked away with another first place finish on the night with two regular season meets and the conference championship remaining in the regular season.
Great job Ladies.
Let's finish out the season strong!!
