Some OTHER Days...

Some days your son goes right down to bed and falls right to sleep.
And some OTHER days you might think he's sleeping but you find out that he's really hosting a tic-tac-toe tournament on his own neck and face.

In case you were wondering, the "x'" took the win!!

Some Days...

Some days you are celebrating Christmas joy and other days you are trying to get spilled sugar out of every crevice in your wooden kitchen floor!!

He's At It Again!!

Earlier in the week I heard Nolan calling for me from the garage.  "Um, I need a little help here..."
This is how I found him...all 'hung up'.

++

Nolan: "Mom, I need to get an airplane so I can fly to California"
Me: "What are you going to do in California?"
Nolan: "You know, stuff grown-ups do."
Me: "And what things do grown-ups do in California?"
Nolan: "Make beef stroganoff and grill cheese"

Wow!  Noel and I must really live out an exciting "grown up" life around our house!

Never fear though... he's not going anywhere anytime soon as that conversation was quickly followed up by, "Never mind, what I really want is popcorn!"

Our Poor Cat

If you came by our house last week, you just may have seen our cat (who we call "Cow") running around our front porch with a post-it note stuck to her fur.  Poor thing!

Apparently my son decided that she needed a name tag in case she wanders off and gets lost.  "When people see the note Mommy, they will know where to bring her back to".

After all, who needs store tags when post-it notes are much cheaper?

A New Sound Can Be Heard...

Marissa had band fitting a couple of weeks ago and chose to play the alto saxophone.  Our dear friend Shannon offered to let us use the one she played for a while to see if Marissa continues playing before we invest in our own.  Band camp doesn't start for two weeks yet, but it's already a big hit here in our house and Marissa has already learned about half of her book.

Silly Shenanigans

The other morning Nolan found his minion hat that had been packed away.  (I thought it was too small and wanted to save it).  He put it on and then tried to find his way around the house with his eyes covered.  (Because he was 'looking out through the goggles, Mom')  LOL

And then he only wanted to eat bananas for breakfast and lunch because he said that bananas are the only things that minions eat!!

Nolans activity for today? He filled up a few Easter eggs with candy and then went outside to hide them. Then He came back inside and told me that when I said "go", he would race back outside to find them. He was gone for quite awhile looking for these eggs and when I asked him why it took so long he said, "because I hid them REALLY good"!!

A Progression of Sorts...

Remember this post last week when we had to make a hospital trip with Nolan after he pulled a cabinet down on top of him?  That evening he looked pretty rough for sure, but unfortunately for him, his injury has progressively looked worse, even if it's actually getting better.

Here he is later Thursday night, the same day of the accident.

By Friday night, he was obviously feeling much better and riding his bike around the garage.  Except for a little bit of swelling over his left eye and bruise, he was looking pretty good.  (He was feeling so good however, he started riding his two wheeled bike like a crazy man and managed to fall over and hit his head on the garage floor)

By Saturday morning, his left eye was all black and blue and he said he could hardly see anything out of it!

Now, both of his eyes are swollen and black and blue...and "even wellow" (as he told the lady in the store yesterday who he caught staring at him).

He looks pretty bad -- but as you can tell, he's feeling great and quite willing to show you his bruises...and his breakfast!

I LOVE This!!

Nolan has really developed a love for books and is always asking for one of his sisters (or I) to read to him.  I LOVE walking into a room and seeing this...

School Updates, Chess & Tough Conversations

We have successfully completed one full semester of school here at home.  Well, actually, we have completed 19 weeks.  Overall, despite a number of bad days (we had good ones too!), I would rate our first semester a big success.  The girls are working really hard and above their level in several subjects.  They only have one lesson left in their math books (so we will move on to the next level) and a few lessons left in their grammar books (so we'll move up a level there also).  Morgan says that her favorite subject is now math and Marissa is really learning to enjoy history.

Recently, Marissa asked Noel to teach her how to play chess.  They played a few games together...

...and then Marissa taught Morgan how to play.  We had a couple of mornings where they played a few games of chess before heading downstairs to do our "real" schoolwork.

Another advantage of homeschooling is this ~ being able to chill out on the couch on a day when you wouldn't have felt well enough to get dressed and head off to a school building.  Morgan was able to keep up with her work by doing it on the couch and then taking breaks to nap when she needed to.

This most recent week, we put away our traditional science books and played with some "goop" instead.  We tried to make invisible ink one day (to go along with our history unit on WWII and the use of spies).  'Good thing no one was really relying on my invisible ink skills because it was NOT a success!!  On another day last week, we made our own clay.  The first recipe was a bust as the girls didn't like the feel of the clay and refused to knead it.  (It was a mixture of glue, water, and bread).  We tried a second recipe that they liked better and we used that to roll out our dough and then shape it into bowls or clay animals.

On Thursday we made up our own homemade window paint.  (You just mixed corn starch with dishsoap and then added food coloring to get the desired color.)  It was fun making and fun decorating...

Unfortunately, the longer it was on our windows, the more it ran and pretty soon you couldn't even tell that what the picture was suppose to be.  Oops.  At least my windows were clean when I washed the designs off!!

As we talked about WWII and American civilians making sacrifices back home to help the soldiers overseas, we made our own "ration cakes".  They used honey instead of sugar, butter and milk.  The girls didn't really like the taste of them but Noel really enjoyed them.  He said he would enjoy having them again.

We learned that the bikini came about because designers were rationing material and we made our own Victory banners in honor of family members who have served in the armed forces.  Not everything we did was fun however.  Talking about D-Day at length was a tough one to cover, especially looking at the pictures of soldiers lying all over the beach.  The Holocaust has been another tough subject to cover.  I try to talk about it enough that the girls understand the horror of the event as it's part of our history; but I also try to protect them as I know Morgan really struggles with nightmares after discussing things like the Holocaust and War.  We were reading Corrie Ten  Boom together but it became too much for her and she asked if she could substitute a few other books instead.  I did agree to that and she read some others that weren't quite as intense and "scary".  I never imagined having such deep conversations with the girls about the evil that exists in the world and yet it has been so good for us to talk about these things together and then thinking about them in light of God's plan and God's desire for his people.  They asked really good questions too like whether it's wrong for Christians to fight and kill others in war; or would it be right for a mother to poison her children and then commit suicide in the name of "protecting" them from the Nazi soldiers.  Is it our right to kill ourselves rather than face denying Christ?  Should Christians have done more to protect the Jews?  Is it right to lie in order to protect others for the greater good.  Can this ever happen again?  Why is it happening again?

Wow!  There were days I didn't know how to answer them and there were days when we all ended up emotionally drained after our lessons.  I wish that I could protect them from what has happened in the past and what is happening all around us today.  I can't however.  Evil exists and that's why we need a Savior to redeem us and to rescue us.  And in addition to our normal studies this month, we have read through an extensive Advent study that speaks of our need for Jesus....how it started back in the Garden when Adam and Eve first sinned against God and our need has continued to this present day.  What a blessing to be able to share with them all over again that our God has it all in His hands and this is all part of His plan!

Spelling Sentences - I Asked For It...

This week I asked the girls to use their spelling words in a sentence and then type them up for me.  Their words are based upon our history unit where we are talking about FDR and the Depression Years.   I told them that they should probably look the words up in the dictionary first to get an understanding of what the words meant before putting them in sentences.  I also told them to use proper punctuation and creativity.   One daughter (who will remain nameless) wrote out the exact definitions from the dictionary in order to prove to me that she knew what the words meant.  She explained to me that she had indeed used them in sentences because she had written the words out in the definition.  The the other daughter (who also will remain nameless) used each word in a sentence, just as I asked.  A few of her sentences made me laugh:

  • Agency:  "The FBI agency is following me.  You don't want to know why"
  • Industrial:  "In the dictionary, industrial has a weird meaning".
  • Conservation:  "I didn't know what conservation meant until I looked it up in the dictionary.  I still don't"
Oh dear!  What am I going to do with these girls?!  LOL

Answering 'What Happened?'

Marissa came upstairs tonight holding an ice pack onto the side of her head.  I said, "Marissa, what happened?"  She answered, "Nolan....THAT's what happened!!"

Crazy Things You Just Might See...

Morgan was entertaining Nolan at the t-ball game last night by playing "Horsie" with him. This meant that she would gallop around and he would follow or she would lay down to sleep and he would copy her. It was going great until she said it was time to eat and he pulled up a huge handful of grass and shoved it into his mouth!! That boy will be the death of me....

What You Might Hear...

Melayna: "I had the deli bacon wrap at lunch today and it was awesome!"
Morgan: "I dont like the bacon on those things"
Melayna: "I dont either. In fact, I dont like the bacon, or the wrap part, or the lettuce..."
Morgan: "Then WHAT part DO you like?"
Melayna: "Just the cheese, really)

This morning it was raining on our drive to school.  Nolan was looking out the window when he broke into the song about the rain coming down and the floods going up.  (Hand motions were included)  All of the sudden, the other three girls were singing with him and doing the hand motions.  It was a great way to start our morning!!

Weekly Updates in 10 Pictures or Less

As another week winds down to a close, I breathe a sigh of relief.  Not only for the things that were successfully marked off my "to-do" list, but also because we are one week closer to warmer weather.  Oh how I long to go outdoors and play!!  To say that we are feeling a bit stir-crazy in these parts might be a slight understatement as we stay indoors to avoid the bitterly cold temperatures.  BUT, we do still keep ourselves busy in one way or another.  Here is a glimpse into our week in 10 pictures or less:

1.  We had another snow day last week due to frigid temps and then one early this week because of an overnight ice storm.  I finally let them break out the paints for a while to help give them something new to do.  Despite the fact that Nolan kept trying to jump in and "help" them out, Marissa and Melayna both had a great time painting together and our living room is now nicely decorated with a few masterpieces!

2.  I watched a young boy last week while the girls were at school.  We turned our living room into a large fort using the couch and the sofa and almost all of our bar stools.  While the girls enjoyed having this monstrosity in our living room for two days, it wasn't very practical since we couldn't eat at the counter or sit on the couches all together.

3.  Since the fort looked so cozy to the girls, they asked if they could sleep inside the fort with all of their sleeping bags and pillows.  It wasn't near as comfortable as it looked at first and believe it or not, all three girls squeezed onto the landing at the bottom of our basement stairs and slept overnight there!!  Seriously, how do kids sleep like that??

4.  After two days of the living room monstrosity, I had the kids use another snow day to re-locate the fort to a semi-permanent location downstairs in the basement.  They opened an "office" down there using the cardboard box Nolan played in all last week and then they asked if they could sleep overnight in that fort.  All of the sleeping bags and pillows and stuffed animals actually fit in there and they slept wonderfully over the weekend!

5.  Nolan has also been able to spend some time inside the fort with me while the girls are at school.  His favorite accessory are the bean bags - and the fact that he can jump off of other things onto those bean bags!

I don't have any pictures of our continued Friday morning Bible studies, or open swimming as a family on Monday nights, or the Saturday morning swimming lessons at the Y that Marissa continues to take.  (And now Morgan has also joined in).  The girls are all taking part in their school's "After School Adventure Program" once again this year and that will keep them busy a few nights a week for the next month.  Morgan is taking "Fun with Glass"; Marissa joined the running club; and Melayna is taking "Beginning Ballet".  And Noel stays busy teaching, tutoring, and now track season is in full swing with their first indoor meet tomorrow.

Wow!!  As always, our weeks - and hearts - are full!!
